Wall of Shame

Shotgun Review of  Toronto Mars Bar event at Gladstone Ballroom May 29, 2004

The Mars Bar created an atmosphere that caught the attention of most everyone in attendance. The Gladstone walls were covered in Black Lab works, the music was pumping, and the Interactive Art Zone was a hit.

Jaison stretched out the canvas across the floor and encouraged anyone to pick up a brush and contribute to the "creation", with an assortment of acrylic paints. There were several artist types in attendance, and to see everyone working together was an amazing sight. The canvas was surrounded by a string of white lights that added to the dark surroundings. The finished piece is a great accomplishment that will be unveiled at the next edition of The Mars Bar, on June 27th.

Visuals were displayed throughout the Ballroom via two projectors and a large screen television. The projected images flashed pictures of art, people, places, and poetry, while the television was used to broadcast 80's alternative video's by the likes of The Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and Iggy Pop.

The music took a turn for the heavy side when George brought a Ministry CD up to David and asked him if he could play their rendition of Bob Dylan's, "Lay Lady Lay". This was followed by classic tunes from Romeo Void, Nina Hagen, Grace Jones, and more. The later part of the evening featured some electro mash up mixes that kept the crowd busy. The evening ended with the traditional "Jet Boy, Jet Girl", by Elton Motello. If you haven't heard this song yet, you are sure to hear it every night at The Mars Bar.
I'm With Stupid, 1300 Queen Street West, donated a few cool 80's tee's that were raffled off late into the evening. You'll spot the winners around town in their new Jam or Violent Femmes get up.

The highlight of the evening for most was when Desmond draped himself in a full bear skin, complete with the head, thereby transforming himself into, The Dancing Bear.

This evening was a perfect reflection of what The Mars Bar is all about. It's about freedom of expression, being yourself, enjoying yourself, and meeting new friends. Won't you join us next month?
