Tom Robinson photo TomRobinson.jpg

Toronto Pride and North by Northeast Collaborate to Present Legendary Queer Icon Tom Robinson

In celebration of the first ever WorldPride celebrations in North America, and the 20th anniversary of NXNE, the two festivals have collaborated to present an intimate showcase with one of the first openly gay musicians to promote LGBT rights through his music. Tom Robinson’s single, “Glad to be Gay”, was originally written for a London gay pride parade in 1976, inspired by the directness and confrontational style of the Sex Pistols, and remains a gay anthem today. This will be his only North American appearance.
Also on the bill are rising local acts WTCHS and Urvah Khan. Arrive early for a retrospective set of 70’s/80’s British queer themed music by DJ Triple-X starting at 8pm.

This is a ticketed event by paid admission or with a NXNE wristband.

Saturday June 21st - Drake Hotel Underground – 1155 Queen Street West, Toronto – Doors 7pm. Start 8pm

Clean, Sober and Proud – June 28/29

Clean Sober and Proud photo CleanSoberandProud.jpg

Clean, Sober and Proud is a substance-free space offering support group meetings throughout Pride weekend, along with a full schedule of entertainment programming as indicated below.

On Saturday, Toronto’s queer dance community returns with groups including, Swingin’ OUT Club, LGBT Dance at University of Toronto, Rainbow Ballroom of Toronto, and Toronto Wranglers. Next The Nia Technique gets us kicking and stretching, before Queer Asian Youth Cabaret brings us a mix of entertainment. In the evening, Georgia TG brings her rocking blues sound to the stage, followed by the experimental renderings of Rusiko, the pop antics of Andre Marc and his dancers, and finally the sweet sounds of California’s Leah Jee.

Sunday begins with a sparkling presentation by Sapphire Dance Productions, before the audience is challenged with some LGBT Trivia. This is followed by two separate readings from Geoff and Clementine Morrigan. The GLAM! Pride Game Show Revue promises games, gags, and prizes brought to you by a variety of comedians, singers, and other assorted performers. No Pants Society then presents Blurred Lines and Wrecking Balls, before Belly Dancers With Pride and The Saucy Tarts entertain us with moves and grooves. The evening musical showcase features the urban pop of Mark Tara and DJ Rob, the naughtiness of Boy Pussy, and dirtiness of Daddy Star, closing the night with the sexiness of Man Chyna. Also, watch for the debut performances by dragsters Lady Skylar Revane and Helena Poison and Vanity.

Alterna-Queer – June 29

Pansy Division photo PansyDivision2.jpg

The programming at Alterna-Queer consists of both emerging and established artists who create a genre of music for the mind rather than the masses. As the Parade ends, DJ Steve Rock will be ramping things up 90’s style, so get there early. Then the live performances begin with two recent female-powered additions to Toronto’s music scene. We open with Hervana, an all-girl Nirvana cover band, followed by the mini-pops of punk, Unfinished Business. Next we rock and roll with the androgynous Sister Hyde, and get all dizzy with the electronic madness of Zoo Owl. As things continue to heat up, it’s time to take things off with No Pants Society presentation of Rob Ford and The Disney Princesses. Back again this year is the one-hour spectacle you don’t want to miss, The Judy and Igby Trash Cabaret. As evening descends into darkness, so does the music as the girls from Pantychrist take the stage, followed Los Angeles vixen Ginger Coyote who is performing with Toronto’s own legendary punk super-group, Sid’s Kids. Closing the night out is luscious bad girl Lydia Lunch and her band Retrovirus, and one of the original Alterna-Queer pioneers, Pansy Division!
